Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are important tools in treating canine arthritis. These medications work by blocking inflammation at the source. Since inflammation causes pain, these medications are very effective in many cases of arthritis. NSAIDs are oral medications and are given daily or as needed for arthritis pain. We have multiple different NSAIDs available for dogs at our Saint Petersburg, FL veterinary hospital, and our doctors can help you chose the best one for your pet. Most dogs tolerate therapy with NSAIDs without side effects. However, a small percentage of dogs may have adverse effects involving the gastrointestinal tract, liver and kidneys. For this reason, we require all dogs on NSAID therapy to have regular bloodwork performed to make sure there are no side effects from treatment.
